One of the three main components of physical security in buildings is the obstacles that deter the easy entrance and exit of outsiders. Obstacles come in many forms, and from the traditional locked doors obstacles now include advanced devices that can be monitored by security personnel even if they are not in the same area. Access cards are now used instead of just plain paper IDs, and access codes have now replaced the old lock and key on doors. Turnstile gates have also replaced the use of regular doors in structures such as warehouses where the amount of security is important. Not only do these devices act as barriers for unauthorized personnel, but they also serve as an alarm system because they send warning to the main security center once the optical locks are tripped by other persons other than the ones who have the proper ID card credentials. Obstacles such as these give added security to a building aside from the usual guards and security cameras.

Looking to Catch Vandals
Tuesday, May 10th, 2011I have a small store out in a rural area of West Virginia. Apparently the local teenagers hang out in my parking lot drinking beer and probably smoking reefer after hours. I do not really care about that so much, and there is not a lot I can do to stop it. Most of them are good kids who just do not have anything else to do, especially since there are not too many jobs around here. What does upset me is that some of them have been doing stupid stuff, turning over the trash and spray painting graffiti on my store. I have some cameras that look down on the gas pumps, so I can recognize the customers and let them pump their own gas. Of course the kids all know this too, so I am looking for a wireless hidden cameras to catch the bad apples with. I don’t want to have to wire up anything. What about battery power or solar powered ones?
